Travel Writing

Lee was widely travelled before she began to specialise in travel journalism, exploring wherever life has taken her, including stints living in the UK, Israel, Canada, and Saudi Arabia.

As a travel writer, she has visited about 40 countries but her specialist areas are the places closest to her, Australia and New Zealand. With a strong interest in people, history and nature, she provides editors with evocative and original stories tailored to suit the style and needs of their publications. Combining the facts with her personal experiences and insights, Lee is also appreciated for her ability to always meet deadlines.

Wherever she is – climbing Mount Bromo in Indonesia or the Sydney Harbour Bridge, walking the Great Wall of China or in the kauri forests of her native New Zealand, dining at “21” in New York or at a street stall somewhere in Asia, drinking tea in Colombo or a poolside marguerita in Bora Bora – Lee is always on the lookout for the unusual and interesting. Her quests for the travel stories with a difference have seen her among the first Westerners since 1952 to cross the DMZ from South Korea to North Korea (in 2003), travelling to Sri Lanka and the Maldives to see how these countries and their tourism industries recovered in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami, and working with a team of volunteers building a bridge and a water supply for a remote village in the Peruvian Andes in 2007.

Lee is one of only a few freelance journalists in Australia who write regularly on travel for both the consumer and trade press. She is a regular feature writer and correspondent for the national monthly travel trade newsmagazine travelBulletin. She is also a confident radio performer and has held regular spots on several ABC radio stations around Australia. As well as writing for the prestigious New York-based guide book company Frommer's, she contributes to many leading consumer publications and is the online editor for Wild Discovery Guides.
